Compassion purifies the soul - How do you deal with a person who makes a mistake?

One way to grow spiritually is to admit your mistakes. Surrender. Seeking justification with guilt leads to more downfall. Enlightenment of mistakes is the way to spiritual purification. It is compassion towards oneself.

There is a story in Shrimad Bhagwat of King Ajamil. There were many bad qualities in that king. When he reached his death bed, he called for his son, whose name was Narayan. When the king uttered the name of God while calling the son, he was liberated. This story instills confidence in people that no matter what their past may be, there is no need to waste time feeling remorseful or guilty. If you turn to God even at the last moment, you are likely to be liberated. This story tells that the soul is not to be allowed to suffer from guilt for the mistakes made in the past.

There are two ways to be free from your mistakes, the present moment and surrender. When you become of a pure mind and remain in the present moment, then you realize your mistake. And in that case, you already come out of that mistake. Instead of thinking about the past, just wake up and accept it. Go ahead and don't get caught up in blaming others or yourself. Blaming someone is just like you are sitting with a dustbin and are ready to throw garbage at someone. Then when you throw it, it turns around and comes to you. This game goes on. If you want to get out of this game, then accept your mistake.

What we usually do is justify our mistakes so that there is no sense of guilt, but that doesn't work. No matter what justification you give, the guilt remains. You resist the guilt and it remains and then somewhere deep down inside it distorts your behavior. You have every right to feel guilty for your mistakes.

Be completely unhappy, for a whole minute, ten minutes or twenty-five minutes – no more than that. And then you'll walk out of it. Instead of justifying the mistake, admit it. Justifying is very superficial, because it doesn't remove the guilt, but it makes you feel more guilty. Be one hundred percent with your guilt and that pain will become a meditation and relieve you of your guilt.

How do you deal with a person who makes a mistake? Don't tell the person about their mistake they already know, or make them feel guilty, defensive, or spiteful, as this will only create more distance. You only point out his mistake to the person who is unaware of it, but is willing to know. Often people know what they have made a mistake, but they do not want anyone to draw their attention to it. Before pointing fingers at someone's fault, see if your comment will help improve the situation, improve coordination, nurture love.

Don't look for motives behind the mistakes of others. When someone does something wrong, we often think that they did it on purpose. But looking at it from a larger perspective, we find that a criminal is actually a victim himself. They may be victims of illiteracy, ignorance, excessive stress or narrow-mindedness. And someone can make a mistake while living with them. If the enlightened person sees the mistakes in others, then with compassion helps him to overcome those mistakes. A fool rejoices over the mistakes of others and proudly declares them to the whole world. A wise man always praises others. Uplifting the soul is conscience.
